Tyne Lifeboat

The Tyne Lifeboat station sits right on the seafront at Whitley Bay, a functional Victorian building that's been saving lives since 1864. It's not a museum in the traditional sense - this is a working station where actual rescue crews still operate - but you can usually pop in and have a chat with the volunteers, see the boats, and get a proper sense of what these crews face in the North Sea.

The building itself is modest, weathered by decades of coastal spray, but that's rather the point. There's something genuinely moving about standing in a space where real emergencies unfold, where people get trained for water rescues you'd rather not think too hard about. The volunteers are generous with their time and stories, far more engaging than any placard could be.

History types will appreciate the continuity - this station has been operational for over 150 years - while families with older kids often find the conversation with crew members more memorable than the building tour itself. Younger children might fidget after ten minutes. It's free to visit, though donations are gratefully received.

If you're based at Parkdean Resorts just down the coast, this makes a worthwhile morning walk. Combine it with a proper look around Whitley Bay itself, which has decent fish and chips and a decent promenade. Old Hartley Caravan site sits a few miles south and makes an equally sensible base for exploring this stretch of Tyneside.
