Twthill

The hill itself doesn't announce itself - you spot it while driving through the Conwy area, a distinctive lump rising up from the flat terrain near Rhyl. Twthill is a prehistoric mound, Bronze Age most likely, and standing on top gives you proper views across the surrounding landscape. It's not dramatic or particularly steep, so the walk up takes minutes rather than an hour.

Who'll get something from it? History types, mainly. The Welsh love their ancient sites, and this one has that quiet, understated quality you find across North Wales - no visitor centre, no gift shop, just the mound itself and whatever stories you bring to it. Kids might manage ten minutes if you're lucky, though the views can distract them from boredom. Walkers taking a route through the area would find it worth a quick detour, nothing more.

It's free and open all hours - you just climb it. Allow fifteen minutes if you're being thorough, five if you're just passing. The nearest town is Rhyl, about three miles away, which is decent enough for grabbing supplies or lunch before or after.

If you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Ty Mawr or Golden Sands, both within easy driving distance, Twthill makes a reasonable morning expedition before heading back to the holiday park. Golden Gate's also close by. It won't be the highlight of your holiday, but it's the sort of thing you tick off while you're in the area - honest rather than thrilling.
