Turgeny

The walk up Turgeny rewards you with proper views across South Ayrshire once you've earned them. It's a straightforward hill walk from near Maybole - nothing technically demanding, but the climb is real enough that you'll feel the effort in your legs.

What you get at the top is a panorama of the Lowlands rolling away beneath you, with enough height to make the world look properly spread out. On a clear day it's genuinely striking; on a damp Scottish afternoon it's a bit of a slog for the cloud views. The peak itself is fairly exposed, so wind can be brisk.

This is the sort of walk that suits people who want fresh air and legwork without scrambling or technical bits. Families with older kids will manage fine if they're used to a proper hike. Walkers passing through South Ayrshire making for more famous peaks elsewhere will find it a reasonable diversion, though it's not the sort of climb you'd plan a weekend around.

Allow a couple of hours return depending on fitness. There's no facilities at the summit, so take water. The nearest accommodation with a bit of style is Freedom Fields Glamping just 3.2 miles away - worth booking if you're planning multiple walks in the area.

Go when the forecast is decent. A clear day transforms this from a competent local walk into something actually worth the drive out to Maybole.
