Tunnel Hill

The view from up here stops you dead. Tunnel Hill isn't some dramatic peak - it's a modest rise above Guildford with the sort of outlook that makes you forget you're in the Home Counties. You get proper views across the Surrey Hills, and on a clear day the distant ridges blur into the horizon like watercolour left in the rain.

It's a walker's spot, really. Not a summit with a trig point and a queue - just a decent vantage point that rewards you for bothering to climb it. The walk itself is straightforward enough from the surrounding footpaths, though it can get muddy after rain. Most people allow 30 minutes to an hour depending on where you start from. There's no visitor centre, no café, no entrance fee. Just you, the view, and the wind.

Walkers and hill-baggers get the most from it. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're keen on the outdoors already - there's not much to do once you reach the top except admire the view and turn back. It works perfectly as part of a longer ramble across the Surrey Hills rather than a destination in itself.

If you're staying at Chapel Farm Park or Wyldecrest Surrey Hills Residential Park nearby, it's worth adding to your walking itinerary. Not the showstopper of a peak, but a proper little jewel if you're in the area and fancy a stretch of the legs.
