Tuffley Park

Tuffley Park sits just outside Gloucester and delivers exactly what you'd want from a local nature reserve - proper woodland walks without the tourist crowds. It's a working landscape where you'll find mixed woodland, open grassland, and a decent network of paths that take anything from twenty minutes to a couple of hours depending on your mood.

The reserve attracts walkers first and foremost, though families with younger kids will find enough to keep them occupied on a half-day visit. Bird watchers should bring binoculars - the mix of habitats means you'll spot everything from woodpigeons to the occasional sparrowhawk. The paths are well-maintained enough, though after heavy rain some sections get boggy so decent boots are worth it.

Admission appears to be free, which is refreshing. Spring and early summer are the best times to visit when wildflowers are out and birdsong is constant. Go midweek if you want solitude; weekends pull in plenty of local dog walkers.

If you're based at one of the camping spots nearby - Court Farm Camping and The Glamping Orchard are both within five miles - Tuffley works as a solid morning or afternoon break from park life. It's not a destination in itself, but combined with Gloucester's cathedral and riverside walks, it fills out a decent day. Allow two to three hours and you'll see the best of what the reserve has without feeling rushed.
