Trudernish Point, Hillfort

The walk out to Trudernish Point takes you across moorland that feels properly remote, even though you're on Islay. The hillfort itself sits on a promontory jutting into the sea, and the views south towards Jura are absolutely worth the effort. You're looking at Iron Age defences here - ramparts and ditches that have weathered centuries - though what strikes you most is the sheer position of the thing. Whoever built this knew what they were doing.

This is one for archaeology enthusiasts and serious walkers rather than casual visitors. The site isn't signposted or developed in any way, so you need to know where you're going and come prepared for bog and heather. Allow a couple of hours return from the nearest access point, depending on fitness. The ground can be squelchy even in dry weather.

You'll want to base yourself in Port Ellen or Port Charlotte if you're exploring Islay's archaeological sites. The hillfort works best as part of a longer Islay itinerary rather than a standalone trip - there's enough history scattered across the island to fill a few days properly.
