Truckle Hill

The walk up Truckle Hill takes about twenty minutes from the car park near Chippenham, and it's steep enough to feel like proper exercise without being a full-on scramble. The reward is a view across the Wiltshire countryside that genuinely justifies the effort - you get that satisfying moment where the landscape spreads out below you and you understand why someone bothered to walk up here in the first place.

It's a cracking spot for families with older kids who don't mind a bit of legwork, and the path is manageable even when wet, though your boots will know about it. The whole outing takes maybe an hour and a half from start to finish if you're not dawdling, which makes it ideal for a morning before heading elsewhere. Walkers love it because the route is straightforward and the views reward you properly.

Historically, this is chalk downland that's been grazed for centuries - you'll notice the landscape feels deliberately open rather than wild. There's no admission charge, which is always welcome, and you can rock up any time. Summer's the obvious choice when the grass is dry and the views aren't obscured by rain, though spring wildflowers do something rather lovely to the hillside.
