Lanhill Barrow

A Neolithic long barrow sits quietly in the Wiltshire countryside near Chippenham, looking rather like a grassy ridge if you're not paying attention. Lanhill Barrow dates back around 5,500 years, which puts it in proper ancient territory - we're talking Stone Age burials and communal graves. What you actually see is a substantial earth mound, about 200 feet long, running east to west across a field. It's the sort of place where you stand there and think about the people who were buried here when Britain was barely settled.

Archaeology enthusiasts will get the most from this one. It's not showy - there are no reconstructions, no visitor centre, just the barrow itself and the landscape. Families with young kids might find it underwhelming after ten minutes unless you've got one who's genuinely interested in Neolithic monuments. For walkers based at any of the nearby sites - Plough Lane Caravan Site or The Moors Campsite are both within a couple of miles - it works as a short detour rather than a destination in itself.

There's no formal infrastructure that we know of, and it's free to visit as far as access goes. You're looking at maybe 20 minutes if you're thorough, longer if you want to sit and absorb the atmosphere. Late afternoon light across the Wiltshire downs is genuinely atmospheric. This isn't a headline attraction, but if you're staying in the area and have an interest in prehistoric sites, it's well worth the short drive from Chippenham.
