Chippenham

Eddie Cochran might have died here in 1960, but Chippenham has far more going for it than its tragic rock 'n' roll connection. This proper Wiltshire market town sits where the River Avon bends through rolling countryside, close enough to Bath for day trips but with its own character intact.

The high street feels lived-in rather than touristy. Locals still use it for actual shopping, and the railway station connects you to London in under two hours - handy if you fancy a day out. Archaeology buffs should make time for Lanhill Barrow, an ancient burial site that predates the Romans by thousands of years. The Quetzal Gallery showcases local artists - worth a look if you're into contemporary art.

Getting here couldn't be easier. The M4 runs just south of town, and regular trains from London Paddington take about 90 minutes. Bath's only a short drive away, and you're well-placed for exploring the Cotswolds to the north.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You get the countryside setting without sacrificing convenience - shops, pubs, and transport links are all within easy reach.
