Tòrr Beag

The walk up Tòrr Beag takes about an hour from Kyle, and on a clear day the views across the Sound of Sleat toward Skye are genuinely worth the effort. It's not a particularly demanding climb - more of a steady plod than a scramble - which makes it ideal if you're camping at Glenshiel and want to stretch your legs without committing to a full mountain expedition.

The peak itself is modest by Highland standards, but that's rather the point. You get proper isolation without needing technical kit or spending half your day on the hill. The reward is a panoramic view that opens up as you gain height - the islands come into focus gradually, and on windless days you can actually hear the water below.

It works best for walkers and families with reasonably fit teenagers who don't fancy anything too serious. Young children might find the final push tedious, and anyone seeking Munro-bagging tick boxes will be disappointed - this is a straightforward local peak rather than a famous summit. The terrain is grassy and boggy in places, so proper boots matter more than technical ability.

Free to access, naturally. Allow two to three hours including a rest at the top. Early morning gives you the best chance of clear views - afternoon mist rolls in regularly even when the valley is sunny. Best suited to May through September. If you're based at Glenshiel, this makes a sensible afternoon outing that leaves you energy for the campfire.
