Trostan Hill

The walk up Trostan Hill starts unassuming enough from the farmland around Maybole, but once you're on it, you realise why people bother making the trek. The summit sits at 1,870 feet - high enough to feel proper exposed when the weather turns, low enough that you won't need specialist kit unless conditions are genuinely foul. On a clear day, the views sweep across South Ayrshire down towards the coast, and inland toward the Southern Uplands. It's not dramatic in the Alpine sense, but there's something satisfying about a hill that rewards effort without demanding mountaineering experience.

This is walker territory, full stop. Families with reasonably fit kids will manage it fine; it's steep in places but not technical. The round trip takes two to three hours depending on fitness and how often you stop for photos. What you won't find up there are facilities, cafes, or marked trails - bring a map or a GPS app, proper boots, and water. Go in summer or early autumn when the ground isn't boggy; spring can be unpleasant underfoot.

If you're staying at Freedom Fields Glamping nearby, it's an excellent way to fill a morning, leaving the afternoon for proper rest or exploring Maybole's town centre. It's the sort of hill that doesn't feature on Instagram much, which means fewer people and a genuine sense of achievement when you top out. Worth doing once.
