Triple Hole

Deep in the Mendip Hills above Winscombe, this natural cave system draws serious cavers and geology enthusiasts rather than casual tourists. The entrance is a proper scramble through limestone, and you'll need torches, sturdy boots and a head for confined spaces. Three interconnected chambers give Triple Hole its name, though the passages between them are tight enough to put off anyone with claustrophobia. Local caving groups use it regularly, but it's not signposted or developed for the public. The limestone formations are spectacular if you know what you're looking at, with flowstone deposits and impressive calcite formations in the deeper sections. Finding it requires local knowledge or a decent OS map - it's tucked away in woodland about twenty minutes' walk from the nearest parking spot. Families with young children should steer well clear. This is proper caving territory, not a gentle underground stroll like Wookey Hole. Adventure seekers staying at nearby spots like Mendip Basecamp or The Batch Campsite might fancy the challenge, especially if they're already exploring the area's other outdoor pursuits. Just make sure someone knows where you've gone. The Mendips are riddled with caves, and this one's particularly remote. Weather doesn't matter much once you're underground, but wet conditions make the approach path slippery.
