Trichrug

The walk up Trichrug is one of those Carmarthenshire climbs that rewards you properly for the effort. It's not a bruising scramble - more a steady pull through farmland and moorland above Llangadog - but you'll definitely know you've climbed something by the top.

From the summit you get views across the Towy Valley that make sense of why people settled here in the first place. On a clear day the Brecons sit well to the north, and you can trace the curve of the valleys spreading out below. The peak itself is moorland rather than rocky, so it's less dramatic than some Welsh hills, but that's partly why it works - less crowded than the honeypot peaks, and the approach is straightforward enough for fit family walkers without being a trudge.

Allow a couple of hours return from Llangadog if you're not dawdling. It's free, obviously - just park sensibly and head up. Mornings are better than afternoons if you want the light right and the paths to yourself.

If you're camping nearby - Cosmos Camping is barely two miles away, or Gelli Glamping a touch further - this fits perfectly into a walking holiday loop around the area. Combine it with a wander through Llangadog village itself and you've got a proper day out. It's the sort of hill that gets forgotten in favour of bigger names, which is precisely why it's worth doing.
