Cribyn Du

The walk up Cribyn Du isn't long, but it's proper steep and the payoff depends entirely on the weather. On a clear day from this peak in the Black Mountains above Llangadog, you're looking at views across Carmarthenshire that stretch for miles - the valley floor spreads out like someone's dropped a blanket of green fields below you. On a grey one, you might as well be walking through cloud. The peak itself is modest, nothing dramatic, but the surrounding moorland has a wild feel to it that rewards the effort of getting up there.

It's a walker's destination pure and simple. The sort of place families with capable kids will enjoy, though it's not a casual stroll - allow a couple of hours for the round trip depending on your fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath or take photos. You'll need proper boots because it gets boggy, and the path can be slippery after rain. There's no visitor infrastructure up here, so bring water and a map. It's free, obviously, being a Welsh hillside.

If you're camping at Cosmos Camping or Barons Court Caravan Park, both just down the road near Llangadog, this makes a cracking morning excursion before heading back for lunch. It fits well with other walking in the Black Mountains area - you're in proper hill-walking country here. Go early if possible; afternoon mist tends to roll in and steal the views that make the climb worthwhile.
