Trewethet Gut

The walk down to Trewethet Gut is steeper than you'd expect, especially if you're not wearing proper walking boots. Once you've made it to the bottom though, you're rewarded with a dramatic stretch of Cornish coastline that doesn't get mobbed with tourists like some of the bigger spots around Bodmin.

It's a proper gorge, really - rocky cliffs dropping down to a small beach and stream that cuts through to the sea. The whole place has this wild, slightly untamed feeling that you don't always get on the north coast. Walkers will appreciate the varied terrain, and if you're into geology or just like dramatic landscapes, it's worth the drive out from town.

The nearest base is Bodmin, which is about six miles inland, but if you're staying at Rosebud Farm Touring Park - the adults-only spot nearby - you're close enough for a morning visit without it eating into your whole day. Allow a good couple of hours if you want to scramble about safely and take some photos. The descent is manageable in decent weather, but after rain it gets muddy and slippery, so pick your moment.

There's no visitor infrastructure at all, so bring water and wear appropriate footwear. It's not somewhere to take young kids without serious supervision, and it won't keep you busy for hours. But if you're after an honest bit of Cornish coast without the postcard crowds, this delivers.
