Trelissick Gardens Beach

The beach at Trelissick Gardens is tucked away on the Fal estuary, just outside Truro - one of those Cornish spots that feels properly remote even when civilisation's only a few miles inland. You get woodland paths that slope down through native trees and then suddenly you're on shingle and sand with views across the water that genuinely take your breath away. The gardens themselves sit above, but the beach is the real draw.

It's a walk rather than a quick stop. Allow a good hour minimum if you're coming from the car park, especially if you're with kids who'll want to scramble on the rocks or paddle. The tidal range here is dramatic - check your times before you go, as the beach shrinks considerably at high water. Low tide reveals proper exploring territory: rock pools, stretches of decent sand, the whole setup.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate the old quay structures and the sense that this estuary was once bustling with industry. Today it's wonderfully quiet, which is precisely why it works. Families with primary-age children get the most from it - older teens might find it a bit underdeveloped.

Trethem Mill Touring Park is barely two miles away, making this an obvious add-on to a camping holiday in the area. Carnon Downs is equally close if you're base camping. The walk from either site is totally manageable, and you'll beat the midweek crowds who stick to Perranporth or Watergate Bay. Worth doing.
