Tregargus Waterfall

The water tumbles down through dense woodland just outside St Stephen, and you'll hear it before you see it - that proper satisfying roar of Cornish granite meeting gravity. Tregargus Waterfall isn't some towering cascade that'll take your breath away on Instagram, but it's the real deal: a genuine working waterfall that's been carving through the landscape for centuries, not some tourist board creation.

You're looking at a short woodland walk to reach it, which takes maybe fifteen to twenty minutes depending on how muddy things are. The path is straightforward enough, though it gets damp underfoot, so decent shoes are non-negotiable. Once you're there, you get a proper sense of place - the kind of Cornish granite gorge that actually means something rather than just looking pretty.

Walkers will appreciate this more than most. It's not a destination that'll occupy you for hours, but it's exactly the sort of detour that makes sense if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Tremarne is barely over a mile away, and it slots nicely into a morning's exploration. Families with younger kids might find it a bit anticlimactic after the walk, unless they're the type who genuinely love splashing about in woodland streams.

Go when there's been recent rain for the full effect. The waterfall can look rather sorry for itself during a dry spell. There's no visitor infrastructure, so come prepared with water and snacks.
