Trefin Quarry

The old slate workings at Trefin are what you come for here - rambling about the quarry gives you a proper sense of how seriously Pembrokeshire took its slate extraction back in the day. You'll see the scarred hillside, abandoned machinery, and those distinctive rectangular cuts into the rock face that tell the story of Victorian industry. It's not flashy or heavily signposted, which is honestly part of the appeal.

History buffs will find themselves genuinely engaged, poking around the remnants and imagining the noise and graft that went on here. Walkers from nearby Haverfordwest often loop it into a longer countryside ramble - it's a decent stopping point rather than a destination in itself. Kids might find it interesting for twenty minutes or so, though it's not the sort of place with interpretation boards or a café to keep them entertained longer.

Trefin sits close enough to several caravan parks - Prendergast is barely half a mile away, and Trellyn Woodland Camping just over a mile - so you could easily visit as a morning excursion from a Pembrokeshire base. The quarry itself appears to be accessible without charge, though facilities are minimal. Go on a clear day; the views across the surrounding countryside make the walk worthwhile even if the industrial archaeology doesn't grab you. Allow an hour to properly explore without rushing.
