Trebah Manor Gardens

The moment you step through the gates at Trebah, you're transported into something that feels properly tropical - which is frankly mental given you're in Cornwall, not Borneo. Subtropical plants thrive here in a way that shouldn't quite work on the south-west coast, but the microclimate does its job well. The gardens slope down to a private beach on the Helford River, and the walk through takes you past exotic ferns, rhododendrons, and trees that look like they've wandered in from somewhere far warmer.

It's absolutely worth the trip if you're the type who gets excited about plants and landscape design. The water features - ponds, streams, a small gorge - make it more than just a stroll through pretty flowers. Kids won't get bored for a good couple of hours, especially if the beach access appeals. Families should allow two to three hours minimum to do it justice without rushing.

The garden sits roughly five miles from Helston, making it a solid half-day outing when combined with other local attractions. Both Stay Wild and The Secret Garden are within striking distance if you're based at either, though honestly the drive's short enough from anywhere in the Lizard Peninsula area. Spring and early summer are prime time when the rhododendrons are firing, though it's decent year-round if you don't mind grey skies.

Don't expect manicured formality - this is a proper woodland garden with attitude. It rewards a wander at your own pace rather than a quick tick-box visit.
