Tranent-Cockenzie Waggonway

The Tranent-Cockenzie Waggonway might sound like a railway enthusiast's obscure footnote, but it's actually one of Scotland's most historically significant transport routes - and you can walk substantial stretches of it near Prestonpans. Built in 1722 to haul coal from the pits at Tranent down to the port at Cockenzie, this was Britain's first steam locomotive railway. The track itself has largely vanished, but the route survives as a walking path through East Lothian countryside, and understanding what you're treading on adds real weight to the experience.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this - you're essentially following industrial revolution infrastructure that changed transport forever. But it's also genuinely pleasant as a ramble, taking you through farmland and past scattered remnants of the old line. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a decent section; it's not strenuous, though parts can be muddy depending on the weather.

The nearest town, Prestonpans, sits right at the Cockenzie end and has its own share of history - a Jacobite battle was fought here in 1745. If you're staying at Haven Seton Sands Holiday Village or Drummohr Camping just down the road, this makes for a cracking afternoon activity that doesn't require paying an entrance fee. It won't keep you occupied all day, but paired with a wander round Prestonpans itself and perhaps a coastal walk, it slots well into a week exploring East Lothian's quieter corners. Go when it's dry if possible.
