Commemoration of The Massacre of Tranent, 29 August 1797

On a quiet stretch of road near Prestonpans, a stone marker commemorates one of Scotland's bloodier moments - the day soldiers opened fire on a crowd of miners and their families. It's August 1797, and the Massacre of Tranent feels oddly distant standing there, but the weight of it doesn't shift.

This was no battle. Around 12 people died when the local militia fired on protesters objecting to conscription. Most were miners from the Tranent colliery, ordinary folk caught up in a moment that turned violent. The stone itself is modest - you won't find tourist infrastructure or interpretation boards - but that's rather fitting. It's a memorial, not a spectacle.

Historically minded visitors will find this genuinely moving. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of prior reading, so you arrive knowing the story rather than discovering it on site. There's no admission charge and no time limit, though you won't linger for more than ten minutes unless you're doing some broader exploration of East Lothian's industrial past.
