Trago

The River Teign cuts through Trago with proper drama - steep banks, dense woodland, and that particular smell of damp Devon earth that hits you the moment you arrive. It's a nature reserve that doesn't announce itself loudly, which is rather the point. You're here for the walk along the gorge, watching the water tumble over rocks, spotting the occasional dipper if you're patient and quiet enough.

The whole thing works best for walkers who actually want to walk. Families with young kids might find it frustrating - the paths aren't manicured, and there's nothing to "do" besides observe. But if you've got teenagers or keen naturalists in tow, the habitat variety is genuinely interesting. Woodland birds, river life, the geological story written in those banks.

The walk takes a couple of hours depending on how far you venture. Go early if you can, especially in warmer months - car park space seems limited and you'll want the place to yourself for proper quiet. Free to access as far as I can tell, though do check locally in case anything's changed.

It slots nicely into a park holiday based near Newton Abbot. Oakmoor, just 2.5 miles away, is adults-only and highly rated - good for a peaceful base. Dornafield's another solid option at four miles, or try The Smithy's glamping pods if you fancy something less traditional. All three are well-positioned for exploring this corner of Dartmoor without the crowds you'd hit at the main attractions.
