Traeth Aberdaron

The beach at Aberdaron curves gently into Cardigan Bay, backed by low dunes and fronted with firm sand that's proper golden when the sun hits it right. You get two distinct moods here depending on the tide - at low water it's a sprawling expanse, but come high tide the beach compresses into a narrower strip that still feels spacious enough. The village sits just inland, all whitewashed houses and a small church that's been watching over the bay since medieval times. Swimming is straightforward here, with a gentle slope and minimal rip currents - families with younger kids will find it manageable. The undertow's nothing dramatic, though check the flags on the day.

It's not a destination beach in the way Newquay is. What makes it work is the peace and the light - there's something about how the bay catches the afternoon sun that makes you want to stay longer than planned. Walkers get plenty from it too, as the coastal path runs through, linking to Porth Meibion and beyond. An hour gets you the essentials; three hours if you're actually settling in with a book and a picnic. Come in shoulder season - May or September - when the schools have packed up and the crowds haven't bottlenecked.

Staying nearby, you're well positioned for exploring the Llŷn Peninsula's quieter corners. Glampio Coed and Treheli Farm are both close enough for an easy drive, while Tyn Ddol gives you the camping option if you want something more low-key. From Pwllheli, it's only half an hour's drive, making it a logical afternoon jaunt without the hassle of a full day out.
