National Trust - Porthor

The Whistling Sands at Porthor live up to their name on the right conditions - walk across them and you'll hear an actual squeaking sound underfoot, caused by the quartz grains rubbing together. It's genuinely odd the first time you experience it, and kids absolutely lose their minds over it. The beach itself is a proper crescent of golden sand backed by low dunes, with views across to Bardsey Island on clear days. It's not vast, but it's dramatic enough to hold your attention.

The National Trust manages this stretch, so you know it's being looked after. There's a car park at the top (small but usually manageable outside peak summer) and a straightforward walk down to the sand. Allow an hour or two if you're just exploring the beach itself; longer if you fancy walking the coastal path in either direction. The sand can be firm and easy underfoot, or soft depending on tides and recent weather.

Walkers and families with young kids will get the most from this. Teenagers might find it quiet after ten minutes. The nearest town is Pwllheli, about four miles away, though honestly you won't need much beyond what you've brought. If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Glampio Coed is less than two miles away, or Treheli Farm a bit further - Porthor works as a proper beach day rather than a quick tick-box visit. Go when the tide's out for maximum sand and the best chance of hearing the whistle.
