Traboyak Wood

A proper walk through ancient woodland just outside Maybole, Traboyak Wood feels like stepping back in time. The forest floor is thick with moss and fallen leaves, the kind of place where you half expect to bump into a Red Squirrel around every bend. The trees are old - oak, birch, and rowan mostly - and they create a canopy that keeps things cool even on warm days.

It's ideal for walkers rather than casual strollers. The paths wind through the wood without much in the way of signposting, so you'll need decent shoes and a bit of direction sense. Most people spend between an hour and ninety minutes here, depending on which trails you choose. The woodland has real character - mossy boulders, small burns running through, the occasional clearing where light floods in.

Families with older kids will enjoy it more than those with toddlers, simply because the terrain is uneven and there's nowhere to push a buggy. History types might find the old woodland itself interesting, though there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards to spell things out.

If you're staying at Freedom Fields Glamping just down the road - less than a mile away - Traboyak makes a brilliant morning outing. Pair it with a walk around Maybole town itself afterwards, or head to nearby Culzean Castle if you want something with more facilities. The wood is free to access and open year-round, though autumn is genuinely special here when the colour changes.
