A flooded salt mine turned into a proper lake - that's Town Pit near Northwich. The water sits where the ground subsided years ago after salt extraction, and now it's actually rather pleasant. You get a decent walk around the perimeter, decent views across the water, and if you're lucky you might spot waterfowl. It's the sort of place that rewards a gentle circuit rather than demanding anything dramatic.

The lake itself isn't massive, so don't expect Lake Windermere vibes. You're looking at thirty minutes to an hour for a full loop, depending on how often you stop. Families with younger kids won't get bored immediately, though there's not much in the way of facilities or attractions actually on the water - it's purely a walking spot. If you're into a bit of local geology and industrial heritage, there's something satisfying about knowing what you're looking at has a proper story behind it.

Town Pit works best as an add-on to a longer Cheshire walk rather than a destination in itself. If you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Pickmere Leisure Park is less than five miles away - it's an easy morning outing. Bring decent shoes because the path can get muddy, particularly after rain. No admission charge as far as anyone can tell, and there's no real season to it, though spring and autumn probably look nicest. It won't change your life, but it's a solid local spot worth knowing about if you're in the area.
