Town Park

The wetland channels cutting through Town Park near Waltham Cross are the main draw here - proper habitat for water voles and kingfishers if you time it right. It's a working nature reserve, not a manicured country estate, which means you'll see actual conservation happening rather than just pretty paths. The walk itself takes you through reed beds and open water, which sounds lovely in theory but can feel a bit muddy and exposed depending on the season. Best in spring when the birds are nesting, or early autumn before everything gets waterlogged.

This is genuinely worth visiting if you're into birdwatching or you've got older kids who can handle an uneven terrain without complaint. The younger ones might tire of it after 45 minutes unless you catch sight of something exciting. Bring binoculars and patience - the magic here is in what you spot, not in the walking itself. Allow two hours if you're pottering about with a camera.

It slots nicely into a week at either Theobalds Park or Fowley Mead Park, both within easy driving distance. Neither of those parks is massive, so combining Town Park with a morning walk breaks up the days properly. The reserve is free to access as far as I could tell, though it's worth ringing ahead as management can shift. Winter visits are atmospheric but honestly the paths get difficult - spring and early summer are the sweet spot here.
