Torvean Park

The woodland paths at Torvean Park wind through mature Scots pine and birch - proper forest walking just a few miles southwest of Inverness. It's a working nature reserve rather than a manicured park, which means muddy boots and genuine wildlife spotting rather than pristine lawns. The mix of open moorland and dense tree cover gives you changing views as you move through, and on a clear day the Moray Firth feels close enough to taste the salt air.

This is one for walkers who don't need hand-holding. There are no visitor centres or cafe stops, so come prepared with water and snacks. The terrain ranges from easy woodland strolls to steeper bits that'll get your heart going - allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to do it justice rather than just a loop round the car park. Birdwatchers particularly keen themselves here; you've got a real chance of spotting woodpeckers, crossbills and the occasional golden eagle if you're lucky.

Families with older kids will manage fine, but younger ones might find it a bit too quiet and unremarkable - there's no playground element or obvious focal point. That said, it's ideal if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Bunchrew or Go Glamping at Loch Ness and want a proper morning out without driving far. Free access, open year-round, though winter can be boggy. Spring and early summer are your best bet for seeing nesting birds and having decent visibility across the glens.
