Torrdown Plantation

A sprawling woodland just outside Kingsbridge that's proper worth a morning wander if you're camping or glamping nearby. Torrdown Plantation is exactly what it sounds like - rows of mature trees creating shaded paths that feel like a proper forest despite being managed land rather than wild countryside. The walking here is straightforward, mostly flat, and ideal if you've got restless kids or want to stretch your legs without committing to a full moorland hike.

It's the kind of place where you'll find yourself turning a corner and suddenly spotting a clearing with decent views across South Devon. The air's noticeably cooler than the fields around Kingsbridge, which is brilliant on warmer days. You won't find cafes or facilities - bring water and make a proper picnic of it if the weather holds.

If you're staying at Hidden Hill Devon or South Devon Camping down the road, this beats another loop around the caravan park. Ashbourne Woods offers similar woodland walking if you've had your fill, but Torrdown's closer and less crowded. Allow two to three hours depending on how thoroughly you explore the paths. Spring's lovely when the bluebells push through, though honestly any season works.

Not a destination in itself - you won't drive two hours out of your way for it. But if you're based around Kingsbridge for a week and looking for decent woodland walks that won't knacker the family, this delivers. Free to access, no booking needed, just turn up and walk.
