Torr Head Scenic Route

The drive along Torr Head Scenic Route, just outside Ballycastle, is one of those stretches where you actually need to pull over repeatedly because the views keep ambushing you. It's a winding coastal road that climbs steeply above the sea, offering proper dramatic perspectives across to Rathlin Island and on clear days towards Scotland.

What you're doing here is essentially driving through geology and weather in real time. The road itself is narrow - pass carefully - but that's rather the point. You're not on some motorway; you're threading along the edge of something genuinely wild. The cliffs rise sharply, the Atlantic churns below, and there's a real sense of being at the edge of things. Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're stopping for photographs and to take it in properly.

This works brilliantly for walkers and keen photographers, though it's equally good as a drive if you're after dramatic coastal scenery without committing to a full hike. Families with younger children might find it less engaging unless they're into views and spotting seabirds - there's nothing to actually do once you're there except look around and breathe the sea air.

It's free, obviously - you're driving a public road. Time it for late afternoon when the light turns golden and the shadows deepen the valleys. Pair it with a stay at Watertop Farm just inland, which gives you a proper base for exploring the Causeway Coast. Don't expect facilities; bring a flask and come prepared for wind.
