Ballycastle Seafront

The seafront at Ballycastle stretches along the Causeway Coast with a raw, windswept appeal that changes completely depending on the weather. On a clear day the views across to Rathlin Island are genuinely striking - you can see the basalt cliffs in sharp detail, and on the rare calm afternoon, the water reflects the sky so cleanly it's hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.

This is a proper nature reserve, not a manicured tourist spot. You're likely to spot razorbills and guillemots wheeling above the rocks, especially in breeding season. The shoreline itself is dramatic - shale and basalt giving way to pebbly stretches where you can walk at low tide and explore small caves. Bring sturdy shoes; it's slippery and unforgiving if you're not careful.

Walkers will get the most from this place. There's a decent coastal path that connects to nearby routes, and you can easily spend two to three hours here without running out of things to investigate. Birdwatchers should come prepared with binoculars - the cliffs attract significant numbers during spring and autumn migration. Families with young children might find it a bit bleak on a grey day, though older kids who enjoy scrambling over rocks will be in their element.

Free to access and open year-round. The nearby Watertop Farm and North Coast 9 Glamping both make solid bases for exploring the coast, and this reserve slots perfectly into a wider Causeway Coast itinerary. Arrive early if you want parking, particularly in summer.
