Torglass Hill

The walk up Torglass Hill from Castle Douglas isn't long, but it's steep enough to make your thighs complain by the top. Once you've hauled yourself up the grassy slopes though, you get proper views across the Solway Firth and down into Dumfries and Galloway's rolling farmland. On a clear day it's genuinely worth the effort.

It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a scramble, so families with older kids will manage fine. Allow forty minutes to an hour for the round trip if you're not rushing. The path can get boggy in wet weather - typical Scottish Lowland conditions - so decent boots matter more than fancy kit.

There's no visitor centre or facilities up there, which is rather the point. You get the hill, the views, and not much else. Free to visit, naturally.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted around Kippford or Castle Douglas, Torglass makes a solid half-day walk without needing a car journey. Kippford View Holiday Park sits just two miles away, and Glenearly Caravan Park is three and a half miles on. You could combine it with a wander down to the village afterwards for a late lunch. It's the sort of hill that locals use to blow off steam rather than somewhere tourists queue up to photograph, which honestly makes it better. Not dramatic, not remote, just a proper little Scottish hill with enough of a payoff to justify leaving your caravan.
