Green Hill

Standing at 279 metres, this modest summit offers proper views across the Stewartry without the lung-busting climb you'd expect from higher Scottish peaks. The walk up from the minor roads south of Castle Douglas takes about 45 minutes through typical Galloway farmland and patches of woodland. Nothing too taxing, though the final approach gets a bit boggy after rain.

From the top, you'll get decent views over the Solway Firth on clear days, with the Lake District hills visible across the water. It's the sort of hill that rewards you more than its height suggests - the rolling countryside stretches out in all directions, dotted with farms and stone dykes. Families with older children will manage it fine, though toddlers might struggle with the uneven ground.

The summit itself is fairly unremarkable - no dramatic cairn or viewpoint marker, just grass and the odd sheep. But that's rather the point. This is Galloway hill walking at its most honest: no crowds, no gift shops, just you and the landscape. Allow two hours return from the nearest parking spot.
