Potterland Plantations

Potterland Plantations feels properly wild - no fancy visitor centres or carved waymarkers here, just serious woodland where you'll encounter more red deer than people.

Dog walkers absolutely love it. The network of forestry tracks means you can let your spaniel off the lead without worrying about traffic, though keep an eye out for the occasional timber lorry. Families with older kids who enjoy proper walks will find plenty to explore, but toddlers might struggle with the uneven terrain.

What strikes you most is the silence. Step off the main track and you're swallowed by towering conifers that block out most daylight even on bright afternoons. It's not everyone's cup of tea - some find it rather gloomy - but if you're after a proper escape from holiday park bustle, this delivers.

From Castle Douglas town centre, it's an easy drive to several entry points. Allow at least two hours if you're doing a decent circuit. The forest works brilliantly as a contrast to the coastal attractions around Kippford, giving families staying at places like Sandyhills Bay or Mollance Farm a completely different landscape to explore inland.
