Torchuaig Hill

The walk up Torchuaig Hill from Dunkeld takes you through proper Perthshire countryside, climbing steadily through woodland before opening out to views across the Tay valley. It's not a massive peak - you're looking at maybe an hour or so to the top if you're at a reasonable pace - but the payoff is genuine. Clear days reward you with sightlines across Tayside that make the leg work worthwhile.

This is squarely a walker's outing rather than a casual stroll. The path has some steep sections and can get muddy after rain, so decent boots matter. Kids with a bit of hill experience will manage it fine, though younger ones might find it tedious. The real appeal is for anyone after a half-day ramble without committing to a full mountain day.

You can do this as a standalone, but it slots nicely into a broader Dunkeld exploration - the town itself has the cathedral ruins and a proper high street. If you're based at Inver Mill Farm Caravan Park just down the road, it's an obvious choice for a morning excursion before heading back for lunch. Erigmore, a touch further out, works just as well as a jumping-off point.

Timing-wise, spring through autumn is best. Winter can turn the ascent into a slippery affair. It's free, naturally - you're just following public paths across open country. Allow a couple of hours if you want to sit at the top and soak in the view rather than just bagging the summit and heading down.
