Tolvan Holed Stone

A Bronze Age stone with a hole bored clean through its centre - that's Tolvan, sitting quietly in the Cornish countryside near Gwinear. It's genuinely odd when you find it, this weathered granite block perhaps four feet tall, the aperture dark and deliberate. Nobody's entirely sure why someone drilled it three thousand years ago. Theory has it it marked a burial site, or served some ritual purpose. Walking up to it, you realise how little we actually know about the people who shaped this landscape.

It's a proper walk-to rather than a drive-to attraction, which keeps the crowds thin. Allow twenty minutes on foot from the nearest road, across fields. The stone itself takes five minutes to look at properly - examine the hole, consider the effort involved, maybe stick your hand through it like everyone else does. Bring good boots if it's been wet; the ground gets boggy. Free to visit and open always, being outdoors.

This works best for anyone interested in Iron Age and Bronze Age history, or walkers after a small detour with a story attached. Kids might find it underwhelming unless they're already excited about archaeology. The real appeal is doing this walk as part of a wider Cornish ramble - you're near decent country for exploring on foot.
