Dry Tree Menhir

Standing alone in a Cornish field, this Bronze Age menhir has been quietly marking the landscape for around 4,000 years. It's a proper upright stone - nothing fancy, no visitor centre or interpretive boards, just a weathered granite monolith that's survived everything the Atlantic weather can throw at it.

You won't spend hours here. Walk out, have a look, maybe take a photo if you're that way inclined, and move on. Twenty minutes maximum, unless you're the type who likes to sit nearby and contemplate ancient peoples. The appeal is straightforward: it's genuinely old, genuinely impressive in its simplicity, and genuinely lonely. No crowds, no gift shop, no explanation of what it meant to whoever erected it. That's either brilliant or disappointing depending on your mood.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the archaeological significance, though you'll need to bring your own research - there's nothing on site telling you why it's here. Kids might find it underwhelming unless they're already interested in prehistory. Walkers, though, should make the detour. It's the sort of thing that rewards a countryside ramble, especially if you're based at The Secret Garden Glamping, just 1.6 miles away.

Free to visit, naturally. No facilities, no fees, no fuss. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light's better and you might have the place entirely to yourself. Pair it with other Bronze Age sites in the region if you're making a proper archaeological tour of Cornwall.
