Todd's Pit

A former gravel pit turned into a proper working lake just east of Cambridge, Todd's Pit offers something the Fens don't often deliver - actual water you can get properly close to. The pit itself is used for fishing, so it's got that working landscape feel rather than the manicured park vibe. Water levels vary depending on the season and extraction work, which means some visits you'll see it glistening under the sky, others it's more modest. The setting is flat and open, typical Cambridgeshire, so don't expect drama - think peaceful rather than spectacular.

It's worth a stop if you're into fishing or just fancy a quiet walk around water that isn't a river. Birdwatchers occasionally find it worthwhile, especially in winter months when visiting species turn up. With young kids it's a twenty-minute visit at most unless they're genuinely fascinated by the machinery or spotting waterfowl. The real value is as a break in a touring day rather than a destination in itself.

If you're camping at Chittering Park or Fen End Farm, both within five miles, Todd's Pit makes a reasonable morning leg-stretch. Just check access before you visit - as an active extraction site, there can be restrictions or changes. The nearest proper facilities are back in Cambridge, so bring what you need. Best visited outside peak summer when the pit is less busy with commercial work.
