Frozen solid for eight days in February 1799, Elizabeth Woodcock survived one of Britain's most extraordinary tales of endurance just outside Cambridge. The story goes that after falling from her horse in a snowstorm, she was buried alive under a snowdrift near Impington and survived by eating snow and staying remarkably calm. Her rescue became a sensation across the country.
