Tod Fell

Tod Fell rises sharply above Castle Douglas, offering one of the better viewpoints across Dumfries and Galloway without requiring a full day's commitment. It's a proper little peak for the Lowlands - nothing dramatic, but the walk up rewards you with sight lines stretching toward the Solway Firth and the rolling farmland that defines this part of southwest Scotland.

The ascent takes roughly an hour from the nearest approaches, depending on your route and fitness. It's steep enough to feel like actual work, but short enough that families with older kids won't spend the whole time hearing complaints. The summit itself is exposed and windswept, which means the views on a clear day are genuinely good, though mist rolls in fast in this corner of the country - check the forecast before you go.

This works well as a morning outing if you're based at one of the caravan parks clustered around Kippford, just a couple of miles away. Kippford View, Gorsebank and the others put you within easy driving distance, making Tod Fell an ideal half-day escape from the holiday site. The walk suits walkers and anyone after a bit of Scottish hill air without the Highlands commitment. Young children might find it dull - it's moorland and grass, no dramatic rocks or burns to explore en route.

No facilities on the fell itself, so bring water and a map. Free to walk, naturally. Go early if the weather looks settled; afternoons often see clouds settling in from the west.
