Toal Lough

The walk around Toal Lough, just outside Cookstown, delivers something surprisingly good for a spot that barely registers on most tourist radars. You're looking at a proper freshwater lake ringed by walking paths - nothing dramatic, but the kind of place where you can actually think straight without fighting crowds.

The main appeal is the circuit itself. It takes a decent chunk of time to loop the water, and the paths stay manageable even after wet weather, which matters in this part of the world. You'll see waterfowl, the occasional fisherman, and on a clear day the Sperrin Mountains form a decent backdrop. It's not the Mourne or Carlingford, but it's solid.

Walkers get the most from this. Families with kids aged seven or up will find enough to keep them occupied for an afternoon, though younger ones might lose interest once they've thrown a few stones in. Birdwatchers and photographers who like golden hour light should factor this into a longer day exploring Mid Ulster.

The lake is free to access with no formal facilities that I could find - bring your own water and sensible footwear. Allow two to three hours depending on pace. If you're staying at Sperrinview Glamping nearby, you could do worse than combining this with a morning walk and heading elsewhere for lunch in Cookstown.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly as a breather between bigger attractions rather than a destination in itself.
