Mullaghturk

The walk up Mullaghturk rewards you with proper views across Mid Ulster once you've earned them. At 658 metres, it's not the highest peak you'll tackle, but the Sperrin range here feels genuinely wild - moorland scrub, boggy patches, and wind that cuts right through you even in summer.

The summit itself is sparse: no massive cairn or viewfinder, just heather and the sense you've actually gone somewhere. On a clear day you can see right across to the Mourne Mountains. On a grey one - which is often - you're stumbling around in cloud wondering if you're at the top or halfway up. Both have their charm, honestly.

Walkers get the most from Mullaghturk. This isn't a family afternoon jaunt unless your kids are keen hillwalkers already. You're looking at a solid two to three hours there and back from Cookstown direction, and the paths aren't manicured. Proper hiking boots matter. It's free, naturally.

Peak bagging types love the Sperrin range because you can string several summits together without much road-walking between them. If you're basing yourself at Sperrinview Glamping nearby, this works brilliantly as a morning or afternoon outing. The glamping spot itself is five-star rated, so you'll be warm and comfortable afterwards - which feels generous after a bog-heavy afternoon.

Best visited April through October. Winter here turns miserable fast.
