Tŵn y Môch

The walk up Tŵn y Môch rewards you with proper views across the Black Mountain range - on a clear day you can see right across Carmarthenshire towards the Brecon Beacons. It's a modest peak at 611 metres, which means it's steep enough to feel like proper hillwalking without requiring technical kit or hours of your time.

You're looking at roughly two hours from Llangadog if you're steady on the legs, less if you're quick. The path starts reasonably clear but gets a bit boggy higher up - standard Welsh mountain terrain. Bring decent boots and waterproofs; the weather changes fast up here. The summit itself is unremarkable in the way many Welsh peaks are, just high moorland with a cairn, but the approach and the panorama justify the effort.

This works best for keen walkers and hill baggers rather than families with small kids. The steep sections aren't technical but they're relentless, and there's not much to do once you're up there except admire the view and eat your sandwiches. On a grey day it can feel a bit bleak and featureless.
