Tir Gwyn

The walk up Tir Gwyn from Llanidloes is a proper hill rather than a mountain, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's a doddle. The summit sits at 1,260 metres and rewards the effort with views that stretch across the Cambrian Mountains - on a clear day you can see for miles across Mid Wales. Most people take the direct route from the town, which takes around two hours up and down, though the path can be boggy after rain so decent boots are essential.

This is squarely walker territory. Families with young legs might find it manageable, but it's not a stroll. The climb is steady rather than steep, which actually makes it worse in some ways - you're working hard but not getting the dramatic payoff of a proper scramble. That said, the moorland landscape has its own appeal, especially if you're into that wild, open feeling. There's not much at the top besides a cairn and the views, so come for the walk itself, not for facilities.

Park yourself at Glangwy Farm Camping, just 3.6 miles away, or Red Kite Touring Park at 6.2 miles. Both are excellent bases for exploring the hills around Llanidloes. Free access, naturally, and you can tackle it any time - though summer gives you the longest daylight and the best chance of clear views. Allow half a day minimum.
