Tiptree Heath

The heath sprawls across Essex countryside east of Maldon in a way that feels properly wild for a corner of the Home Counties. It's an open expanse of low-growing vegetation - heather, gorse, bilberry - that shifts colour through the seasons and gets properly golden come late summer. You can walk for hours here without hitting a fence or a gift shop, which is increasingly rare round these parts.

It's the kind of place that appeals to serious walkers and naturalists more than casual visitors. Bird watchers come for the breeding populations of nightjar and woodlark. The terrain is gentle enough for families, though there's little in the way of facilities or marked routes - you navigate by map and instinct. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're after a proper walk.

Historically it's significant as one of Essex's few remaining lowland heaths, a habitat that's vanished from most of southern England. That's what makes it worth the drive rather than just being a nice bit of open ground.

If you're staying at Mill Beach Seaside Resort or Osea Leisure Park nearby, Tiptree Heath works as a morning or afternoon outing before heading back to the coast. The Maldon coast is only a short drive away, so you can combine it with waterside walks along the Blackwater estuary. Come on a clear day though - in rain and mist it loses some appeal and visibility can be poor.
