Great Wood

The woodland around Maldon has proper character, and Great Wood is where you get a sense of why Essex folk have always treasured this corner of the county. It's a straightforward forest walk rather than a visitor attraction with facilities, so come with realistic expectations. The paths wind through decent-sized trees and the kind of quiet you don't often find this close to civilisation. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think.

Walkers will get the most from it, honestly. The routes are fairly gentle and well-marked, making it ideal for a morning ramble before heading into Maldon itself for lunch. With kids, you've got maybe an hour to ninety minutes before they start asking if you're nearly done, unless they're the type who like spotting birds and insects. The woodland floor changes with the seasons - muddy as anything in winter, but lovely and damp in summer.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks like Osea Leisure or Mill Beach, Great Wood makes a proper alternative to another beach day when you fancy a break from the coast. It's close enough that you won't waste half your morning driving. Steeple Bay is a touch further out but still within reasonable reach. There's no charge that I'm aware of, and you can turn up whenever suits you. Just bring waterproofs and accept the Essex mud as part of the deal.
