New Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Maldon, New Wood is the sort of place you'll stumble upon if you're already in the area rather than drive across Essex specifically for it. The forest itself is unremarkable - mixed deciduous trees, well-trodden paths, nothing that'll make you gasp. But that's rather the point. It's genuine, undeveloped woodland without the visitor centre nonsense or the crowds you'd get at bigger Essex forests.

You get a decent hour's walk here if you don't rush, maybe ninety minutes if you're exploring properly. Families with young kids won't be disappointed - the paths are manageable and there's enough space to let them run ahead without losing sight of them. Serious walkers might find it a bit limited for a dedicated trip, but combined with nearby Osea Leisure Park or Teybrook Orchard as a base, it works nicely as part of a wider day out in the Maldon area.

Admission details are thin on the ground - likely free, as most accessible woodlands are - but do check locally before you go. Early morning is best if you want any sense of peace; afternoons can get busy with dog walkers and local joggers. It's the kind of place you visit because you're staying nearby, not because it's a destination in itself. Which is fine. Sometimes that's exactly what you need.
