Tippings Wood Local Nature Reserve

You'll need a decent pair of wellies to do Tippings Wood properly, especially after rain. This Nottinghamshire woodland sits just outside Nottingham and offers proper walking territory - the kind of place where you can actually get lost in the trees rather than shuffle along a manicured path. The reserve has a network of trails winding through mixed woodland, and it's genuinely quiet. No crowds, no gift shops, just forest.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The paths aren't particularly strenuous, but they're muddy enough to feel like you've earned a walk, and the canopy is thick enough that even on grey days it feels moody rather than depressing. Birdwatchers come here regularly - you might spot woodpeckers if you're lucky and keep still. Kids under ten will probably tire of it within an hour; it's not the sort of place with viewpoints or dramatic rock formations to break up the walk.

Access appears to be free, though facilities are minimal. There's no visitor centre or café, so bring your own water. Best visited during autumn when the light filters through differently, though muddy tracks are more of a hazard then.

If you're staying at New Hall Farm or Sherwood Castle Holiday Forest nearby, Tippings Wood works as a morning walk before heading elsewhere.
