Tingewick Wood

Ancient woodland just outside Buckingham that feels properly remote despite being minutes from civilization. Tingewick Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - a genuine working forest with managed paths that wind through mature trees, open glades, and the occasional surprise of bluebells if you time it right in spring.

The woodland works brilliantly for families who actually want their kids to do some walking rather than potter about on a manicured trail. There's genuine forest floor here - roots, muddy patches, places where you need to pay attention. Walkers will appreciate the quietness. It's not dramatic landscape stuff, but it's England's woodland as it actually is, which beats a lot of the overmanaged alternatives.

Don't expect facilities. This is free-access woodland, which means no cafes, no visitor centre, no marked-out picnic areas. Bring what you need. A good two-hour wander is realistic, longer if you're the type to sit about listening to birds.

If you're camping at Barton Hill Farm nearby - less than two miles away - this becomes your daily dog walk and forest ramble rolled into one. Even from the touring parks further out around Claydon, it's worth the short drive. The area lacks the showpiece attractions of the Cotswolds to the west, so Tingewick Wood serves a proper purpose here: a proper bit of woodland, nothing fancy, no pretence. That's exactly when ancient forest does its job best.
