Tile Yard Wood

Dense oak and beech canopy blocks most of the light in this proper working woodland just outside Preston. The paths wind through patches of bramble and birch, with the occasional clearing where wildflowers push through in spring and early summer. You'll hear woodpeckers most mornings and spot the odd red squirrel if you're lucky.

Walkers looking for a peaceful hour or two will get the most from Tile Yard Wood. The terrain's fairly gentle, though muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential. Kids might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes - there's no playground or obvious adventure spots, just trees and more trees.

Being so close to Preston means it's handy for a quick forest fix without the drive to the Lake District. The wood connects to a network of footpaths that stretch towards the Ribble Valley if you fancy extending the walk. No facilities to speak of, so bring your own water.

Staying at one of the nearby sites like Claylands or Moss Wood makes this a proper convenient morning walk before heading to bigger attractions. It's the sort of place that works best as part of a longer ramble rather than a destination in itself. Free parking when I visited, though that might change.
